Casa Adobe History

The Full Story

Casa Adobe is located on the Osa Peninsula-home of the renown Corcovado National Park- just on the outskirts of the town of Puerto Jimenéz, in the quiet neighborhood of Barrio Gaviotas. Barrio Gaviotas is the actual name, though locals affectionately refer to it as Gringolandia. It is also commonly called Pueblo Viejo since the original settlement of Puerto Jimenéz (or Santo Domingo at the time) was located here. Around 1950 the town was relocated to its current location and "Pueblo Viejo" slowly devolved back to pasture. In the 1970s, Don Chon Mesen, my grandfather, bought this land. He lived in the beach house on the left side of the main road of Pueblo Viejo. On April 17, 1975, I was born in that house and spent many of my childhood years playing on the beach and exploring the mangroves with my 6 brothers and 2 sisters. In the 1990s, Don Chon subdivided the land and deeded the lots to his 14 children. In 1998, we bought this lot from my Uncle Carlos, and constructed "phase 1" of Casa Adobe in October 1999. We moved in on December 25, 1999. In subsequent years we added an additional room, a back apartment (the casita), expanded the front porch and in 2021, a pool!

This year, 2022, we purchased the adjacent lot- Villa Dulce. All told, the land measures a half acre. My mother, Doña Rosita, continues to live on the property. She loves to greet our guest and offer her advice and help in any way possible.
